Wordpress: Version 2.9

The latest Wordpress version 2.9 is now available for download. The new Wordpress has a new codename - Carmen - which is named in honor of magical jazz vocalist Carmen McRae (whom were added to the Last.fm WP release station).

Here are the cool stuffs from user point of view and feature highlights:

Global undo/”trash” feature - trash is added to the blogging system where you can temporary put the unwanted things (e.g. post and comment) in the trash. You can undo the action by restoring the deleted item from the trash too.
Built-in image editor - This is pretty cool when you want to have control over you images. You can edit, rotate and etc like how you do it in an image editing software.
Batch plugin update and compatibility checking - Update all you plugins at once without having clicks for each one. It is also now support compatibility checking to see if the plugin compatible with your current version of Wordpress.
Easier video embeds - Inserting videos to post is now much easier. Instead of copying codes and paste it to your post under HTML mode. You can now simply copy the URL of the video to Wordpress and it will do the rest for you. The following websites are supported: YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv

To start upgrade, simply click on the upgrade link on top of the admin page after you have logged in as an administrator. If you don't see the link, you can kick start the upgrade by clicking the "Tools -> Upgrade on your left side bar of admin page to check for unpgrade.

Wordpress: Catch A Spam Comment With Statcounter

Sometime your Wordpress' anti spam software (e.g. Akismet) may not able to stop all the comment spam because the comment looks too real to it and to human too. In this case, you will need to identify the comment whether it is actually a real comment or it is automatically submitted by software.

Someone who made a comment must have visited your site. That's it, if he or she has not visited your site but his or her comment is posted on one of your post. Then it is very high possibility that the comment is a spam comment.

How do you ensure someone who left a comment on your blog actually visited your site? The best way to do it is by looking at the IP address where the computer submitted the comment.

In Wordpress, when someone has made a comment, his computer's IP address is recorded. With the IP address, you can check the IP address against the IP address recorded in your website's stats counter.

One of the stats counter software that allows you to look up an IP address is Statcounter. After you have logged in into Statcounter, select your blog website's statistic and then click on the "Look Up IP address" link on the left.

Key in the IP address where your Wordpress comment entry came from and click "Search!". If an entry is matched, that means he or she who submitted the comment has actually visited your website before.

If you have StatCounter and running it's script in your Wordpress blog, it is recommended that you use this plugin instead of manually edit theme's source code or put the script at text box in the widget. PayPal: Withdraw PayPal Money to Malaysia Bank Account

Good news to all Malaysian who has PayPal account! You can now withdraw you PayPal account to you local bank account in Malaysia.

Previously, Malaysians can only withdraw their money using debit card and the withdrawal is quite high too. In order to lose less than 1% of total money withdrawn, you need to withdraw at least USD100 to minimize the loses in transaction fee.

PayPal now offers better option to Malaysians. You can now withdraw your money for a withdrawal fee of RM3 for amount RM40 (minimum withdrawal) to RM400. Withdrawal fee for amount of more than RM400 is free!

To add a Malaysia bank account to your PayPal account, login into your PayPal account, click Profile > Add/Edit Bank Account. Fill in you name, bank name, MEPS bank routing code, bank account number, re-enter bank account number and click continue for confirmation.

If you are not sure what is the MEPS bank routing number for your bank, simply click on the Details link next to the MEPS bank routing code text field, a list of major banks' routing code in Malaysia will be shown.

Wordpress 2.8.1 is now available for download. The main changes in Wordpress 2.8.1 is mainly to tightens security for plugin administration pages and also to fix many other bugs.

The upgrade is not a compulsory and it is recommended as some admin pages added by certain plugins could be viewed by unprivileged users, resulting in information being leaked.

Below are some of the highlights:

Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.

Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.

The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.

A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.

Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.

Translation of role names fixed.

wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.

Upload error messages are now correctly reported.

Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.

Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.

SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.

Switched back to curl as the default transport.

Updated the translation library to avoid a problem with mbstring.func_overload.

Stricter inline style sanitization.

Stricter menu security.

Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.

RTL layout fixes.

Google Adsense: Can I place small images next to my Google ads?

You may have seen people to put small images next to Google ads with size Medium Rectangle (300 x 250) and Large Rectangle (336 x 280) to gain more clicks and to get higher click thru rate.

Can you actually do that? The answer is no.

According to Google Adsense, the way you put the images will mislead the visitor that that the images and the ads are directly associated, or that the advertiser is offering the exact item found in the neighboring image.

They may click the ad expecting to find something that isn't actually being offered. That's not a good experience for users or advertisers.

WordPress.org has released its latest WordPress Version 2.8, named for noted trumpeter and vocalist "Chet Baker". WordPress Version 2.8 is now available for download.

WordPress Version 2.8 has some noticeable improvement to its to themes, widgets, taxonomies, and overall speed. Besides, it is now much more easier to use than the previous versions.

Like the plugin's auto-installation feature in Version 2.7, you can now install WordPress themes with clicks in the Admin panel itself. You can browse, preview and then install the theme you like right from your blog admin panel.

The widget interface was completely redesigned to allow you to do things like edit widgets on the fly, have multiple copies of the same widget, drag and drop widgets between sidebars, and save inactive widgets so you don’t lose all their settings.
